boss management

Do you want to be a manager? You need to start this mindset shift now!

Management skills are one of those skills that for as many books, posts, videos and courses that you read or see you will never going to be in a very comfortable position. The reason for that is that being a manager is a complete mindset shift from being an individual contributor.

In this blog post, we are going to discuss what is this mindset shift and how this realization can set you up for success in the transition to being a manager.

Individual Contributor moving to Manager

Like me in the past, if you are an individual contributor and you would like to start the transition for a management position you need to transition from being concerned about how are you going to complete your work to how your team is going to complete their work.

This might seem a subtle change but the reality is that is not just a change in your responsibilities and in your daily schedule but in fact, is a complete change in the way you think as from now on your best work is not your individual contributions or achievements but instead how your enable your team to do their best work.

This change in your mindset can start even before being in a management position in fact I assure you that you will be in a much better position to get a promotion if you start cultivating this mindset shift now…

Like any habit or change, this shift will not happen overnight so it will require willpower and deliberate practice. You will need to disregard your past experiences and rewards as an individual contributor and reconfigure your default behaviours in order to think in your team members first and then you second.

What makes a manager successful

Your success as a manager is not the work that you deliver and that in fact is one aspect of this change that will be difficult because at the end of your day you will for sure feel as if you didn’t do any work as your mind is still programmed as an individual contributor where your individual contributions are the measure for your progress.

Instead as a manager, your work is making sure that your team delivers the work that needs to be done. Many times this is in the form of removing impediments for someone’s progress in addition to motivating and enabling your team members to deliver their work.

Equally important, you will not get that many times anymore a “you did great work. well done” as that is now your responsibility to tell your team members when they did well, so now your small validation signals are when someone tells you “thanks for listening… ” or “I’m excited to work on this task… “.

So if you would like to move to a management position now, you know where to start. Start changing your mindset and put your team first.
